Resumen:
It has been proposed that the diazotrophic bacterium, Herbaspirillum seropedicae, has beneficial effects on crops due to the production of plant growth regulator and substantial BNF improvement. In plants, ammonium is mainly assimilated into glutamine and glutamate through the action of glutamine synthetase (GS) and glutamate synthase (GOGAT). An alternative route in the nitrogen assimilation is catalyzed by glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH). In the present study, the effects of Herbaspirillum seropedicae strain Z 152 inoculation were assessed on maize seedlings from 3 to 18 days after inoculation (DAI). Bacteria positively affected plant development, nitrogen content and the activities of ammonium assimilation enzymes. The nitrogenase activity was detected in inoculated plants confirming the interaction between bacteria-maize seedlings. This result indicates that the BNF contributed by Herbaspirillum seropedicae infection may have significance for the nitrogen metabolism of maize seedlings.
