Resumen:
The existing geological and geophysical data has been combined in order to study the tectonic characteristics in the region of the Pipanaco´s salt basin, in the Catamarca and La Rioja provinces (Argentina). The study begins with the gravimetric measurements that determined the anomaly maps. These maps were later filtered, permitting identification of the inhomogenieties in the upper crust. Were prepared upper crustal density models, 2D and 3D justifying the Residual Bouguer anomaly. These models indicate that the sedimentary cover of the Salar de Pipanaco is approximately 3.5 km deep (maximum average). In addition high-density bodies, non-outcropping were found, whose origin corresponds to evolutionary stage of the Central Andes. This dates back to the early Carboniferous after beginning as a rift.
