Resumen:
Argentina is characterized by a variety of climates that differ along latitude from subtropical to cold temperate, and from West to East in relation to aridity gradients. This, coupled with a peculiar topographic distribution, with the Andes stretching from North to South, determines a wide variety of aquatic environments. During the last 30 decades several groups of researchers emerged in different regions of the country and displayed a phycological solid work, greatly increasing the taxonomic, floristic and ecological knowledge. Both the amount of research papers published, and the diversity of regions, habitats and issues related to freshwater algae known today for Argentina, led us to publish this work. We have invited 34 researchers working in different institutions spread over the Argentine territory, each one with expertise on issues concerning their own region, to collaborate in this work. While in a territory as large as Argentina there is still much research to be done in all natural areas, we believe that this work is a valuable contribution to the phytoplankton knowledge of the main aquatic ecosystems of the country. Moreover, given the diversity of environments studied, the different chapters will also be relevant to update the information of freshwater phytoplankton in our planet. This volume constitutes a review of the existing information about freshwater phytoplankton of Argentina. It includes the description and analysis of this community from lentic and lotic water bodies of the country.
