Resumen:
Extant species of horses have a widespread distribution today on all continents except Antarctica and Australia. To understand the diversity of horses, it is essential to know their fossil record and particularly the South American episode. In recent years, however, there have been many important discoveries in South America, and these, in conjunction with such new methods and techniques such as precise geochronology, have allowed us to achieve a much greater understanding of the evolution and biology of this important group. This chapter synthesizes theimportant of the study fossil horses from several disciplines including biology, geology and paleontology.
