Resumen:
Objective: to describe clinical and demographic characteristics, and risk factors in patients younger than 45 years, both genders, withhistopathological diagnosis of OSCC.Study Design: 14 patients under age of 45 or 45 years old were included in a retrospective descriptive study from 2009 to 2018. Variables registered were age, gender, tumour location, presence of potentially malignant disorders, exposure to environmental or professional carcinogens, HPV-status, presence of Chronic Mechanical Irritation, tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, mate consumption inheritance of aerodigestive cancer, degree of cell differentiation, TNM staging, treatment modality and years of follow-up. Results: Those under 45 years of age with oral cancer were mainly males, with tumours located on the edge of the tongue, TNM stages I and II, and moderately differentiated. The most frequent risk factors were chronic mechanical irritation, consumption of mate, and exposure to environmental carcinogens. HPV infection was only present in 3 patients. The preferential treatment was surgical, and with an average follow-up of 3.75 years. 3/14 died during the first year of treatment. Conclusions: The most frequent risk factors for OSCC in patients under 45 years do not seem to be the classic risk factors.Further research in a large sampleis needed to understand the factors of risk related to oral carcinogenesis in young people and identify possible confounding or potentiating factors including genetic and hereditary factors and diet.
