Asymptotically Good Towers of Function Fields

Function fields with many rational places play an important role in algebraic coding theory and for reasons related to practical implementation of these codes it is imperative that the involved functions fields are given in an explicit way, i.e. in terms of generators and defining equations. We will give a brief description of the basic problems associated with the construction of asymptotically good explicit towers of function fields and show some concrete examples of these constructions.
