Resumen:
The objectives were to establish comparative values of the neurotransmetter enzyme cholinesterase in plasma of juveniles and adults of a neotropical fish Prochilodus lineatus, under normal conditions. The method of Ellman (1961) was used to the enzymatic quantification and the reagents used in human serum or plasma determination were adapted to carry out the test in fish. The normal characterization was made in 88 juveniles and 24 adults, captured in pristine environments. The mean cholinesterase values for these two groups were 159.2 µkat/L and 139.7 µkat/L, respectively. According to test t of comparation of means, no significant differences were found between juveniles and adults, and the correlation analysis revealed that cholinesterase values did not change in relation to weight and sex of the specimens. This study might be used as standard in future research to evaluate cholinesterase inhibition substances.
