Resumen:
A manganese oxide (MnOx) which has shown a good performance in the combustion of volatile organic compounds was impregnated with cerium, and later both oxides were impregnated with gold. The powders, which were obtained, were characterized by XRD, XRF, TPR and nitrogen adsorption. The presence of gold in the catalysts causes a diminution in the specific area. Manganese mean oxidation state in the samples was between 3.3 and 3.6. Gold particle size was found to about 50 nm, estimated by DRX. The activity of the compounds synthesized was studied in the CO oxidation reaction. The activity based in the T90 was: Au/MnOx > MnOx > Au/Ce/MnOx > Ce/MnOx, with T90 of 122, 132, 136 y 191ºC, respectively. Au/MnOx and Au/Ce/MnOx presents a T10 of 30 and 49ºC, respectively, indicating that gold favors CO oxidation at room temperature. The presence of water in the reaction stream causes a significant decrease in the catalytic activity, due to the blocking of active sites.
