Resumen:
The papal policy towards the Iberian kingdoms saw a turning point in the times of Gregory VII, when the papacy began to intervene in the Hispanic Church. The first interventions of the papacy sought to achieve the liturgical unification of the Church by replacing the Mozarabic rite used in the Iberian Peninsula with the Roman Rite. Since the late 11th century, these were intensified and began to extend over diverse aspects of the ecclesiastical life of the Hispanic Church, such as the appointment of bishops, the design of the diocesan map and the conflicts between episcopal sees. Likewise, the Iberian bishops began to turn to the Papacy to intervene in the internal affairs of their dioceses. Within this framework, this paper aims to analyze the role of the papacy in the conflicts that developed as the Gregorian Reform progressed and that confronted bishops and monasteries over the exercise of episcopal jurisdiction in monastic churches and territories with exemption privileges. To that end, I will examine the disputes between the bishopric of León and the monastery of Sahagún considering the modalities of papal intervention, the reception and application of the papal directives by both bishops and abbots, and the effects of these interventions on the configuration and development of the diocese.
