Leeds International Medieval Congress 2022Special Thematic Strand: Borders4-7 July 2022Session 736 - The Bishops Borders, I: Agents and Territories in Medieval IberiaTuesday, 5 July - 14:15 BSTThe Bishop and the Borders: Building the Diocese in Northern SpainAbstract: The establishment of diocesan borders was a complex process in which bishops had to deal with disputes over the diocesan space, the control over churches and villages located in frontier areas and the demarcation of territorial enclaves under jurisdiction of a bishopric but located outside its borders. The aim of this paper is to analyze the processes involved in the creation of the diocesan borders in the area of Castile-Leon, focusing on two dioceses whose delimitation in the 11th century led to a series of conflicts with their neighboring sees: Palencia and Burgos.
