Resumen:
Is there something such as a rites controversy in the Colonial South American Low Lands? The context of the rites controversy in Asia imposes many limitations to comparison. However, my argument is that in practice, missionaries from Asia and the Americas, faced similar problems or dilemmas of adaptation and cultural translation that needed an immediate solution. That is why I argue that a comparison would be possible precisely at the level of local interactions. This is also the level of the administration of the sacred which can be seen as an arena for the struggle between priests and local indigenous leaders.
