In order to understand how alginates can be optimized as useful delivery systems for therapeutic applications, this chapter focuses on the following factors impacting on drug release from alginate matrices: type or cross-linking reaction for networks formation, stability of alginate matrices, pH effect, alginate composition, chemical characteristics of encapsulated drugs and modification of the functional groups in alginates.
