Relevance of intracellular replication in the antibody-parasite competition during Chagas disease

We extend our proposed model for the competitive parasite-antibody interactions in Chagas disease by separately describing the parasite intracellular and extracellular phases. We present phase portraits of the evolving populations and study the stability  of the asymptotic regime. The model yields several steady states, which correspond to the clinically observed outcomes of the parasite-antibody interactions. Moreover, the model solutions faithfully reproduce available population data and, for the first time, yield predictions for parasite-induced cardiac cell damage.
