ABSTRACT Structural control on magmatism in the surroundings of San Antonio de los Cobres, eastern sector of the central PunaIn this contribution we describe N-S andean thrusts located at the central-eastern border of the Puna that are interrupted by the Calama- Olacapato-Toro lineament (COT). These thrusts are related to the reactivation of Paleozoic faults during the Cretaceous and during the Andean orogen. The uplift of the sierras of Muñano, Cobres, Cajón and Tanque is related to the thrusts that are associated with the emplacement of volcanic and intrusive bodies of the middle Miocene. The unconformable relation between palaeogene and cretacic units that are intensely folded and faulted in the footwall of the thrust faults with the slightly deformed volcanic and volcaniclastic subhorizontal deposits reveals the existence of intense tectonic activity previous to important volcanic activity during the middle Miocene.
