Metal supported on resins are catalysts used in several reacting systems. In this work, we study the water deoxygenation reaction, using palladium supported on ion-exchange resins, to produce water for example for beer industry, or for heating systems in order to avoid corrosion. The deactivation of these catalysts is a major issue, due to palladium lost and resin modification, mainly due to the cleaning-inplace procedure. The characterization of the resin is needed in order to know the state of the material during operation, or to select a new support to improve the overall performance. This information is obtained by the normalized ASTM tests, which specifies: total exchange capacity, salt splitting, water retention capacity and bead density. Beside these, adsorption isotherms using macro-porous resins were carried out. The stability of surface active groups were analyzed by exposing the ion-exchange resin to high temperatures (100°C) and pH, simulating the cleaning in place procedure. Catalyst containing Pd supported on anionic weakly-basic macro-porous ion exchange resins, were prepared using palladium chloride. The palladium is reduced with hydrazine. Catalyst characterization was made doing dynamic chemisorptions of CO, and Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA). The activity is measured in a fixed-bed system, on the water deoxygenation reaction. Different types of resins and different kind of competitive ions have been evaluated with this purpose, to modify the dstribution of the palladium along the particle radius, and its influence on the catalyst stability.
