Resumen:
The objective of this project is to develop catalytic materials to reduce soot and NOx
emissions from diesel engines. Catalysts containing potassium, cobalt and barium supported on
ceria, magnesia and lanthanum oxide are studied. Catalytic performance is correlated with
physicochemical properties. The role of each support in the reaction mechanism is studied. The
contact between the soot and the catalyst was analyzed by direct impregnation of the active function
on the soot. It was found that although the contact is not as good in the case of the mechanical
mixture bewteen the soot and the catalyst, the possibility of a proper catalyst design overpass the
poor contact, being the activity of the best catalyst physically mixed with the soot, higher than
direct impregnation of the active function on the soot.
