Resumen:
Glass microspheres are used for both medical and industrial applications among others. It is of interest to develop simple experimental techniques to characterize their mechanical properties. The point load strength test (PLST) is an inexpensive destructive method to estimate the fracture strength in a wide range of materials. In addition, the Weibull statistics is widely known and used for the analysis of the fracture strength of brittle materials. It states that the breaking load of a specimen is a statistical phenomenon and depends on the material type and its size.In this study we performed PLST tests of aluminoborosilicate and itrium aluminosilicates glass microspheres with sizes between 50 and 200m. We measured the breaking load of a set of particles and also using Weibull statistics, we determined the value of the parameters that describe their mechanical behavior. From this analysis it was found that aluminoborosilicate microspheres have a Weibull modulus of 4±0,1 and for the itrium aluminosilicate 3,3±0,1. Fracture stress (where 63% of the population breaks) for spheres of 75m were 710±20 and 390±20 MPa respectively.
