Resumen:
Whole cell biocatalysts provide a potential cheaper and suitable route for industrial applications. Microorganisms are source of a wide variety of enzymatic activities, maintaining the enzymes in their natural environment and therefore protecting their activities from reaction conditions. In addition, the use of whole cell biocatalysts avoids troublesome enzyme isolation procedures. This chapter focuses on the whole cell biocatalyzed preparation of nucleosides analogues and their derivatives,an extensive group of natural and chemically modified compounds that display a wide range of structures and activities.Among other topics, this chapter deals withthe microbial glycosylation/transglycosylation mediated by nucleoside phosphorylases, the multienzymatic or/and chemoenzymatic processes mediated by whole cells to prepare nucleoside analogues and the whole cell biocatalysed synthesis of nucleoside prodrugs
