Resumen:
Ethoxymethylfurfural (EMF) is a liquid biofuel considered as a cetane booster and a possible substitute for petroleum diesel, it is obtained from the etherification of Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in the presence of ethanol and an acid catalyst. Siliceous materials offer good textural properties and can be functionalized to incorporate acidity. In this work, the catalytic behavior of four sulfonated mesoporous silicas was evaluated: KIT-6, FDU-12, SBA-15, and Silica Nanotubes (NTS), in a batch reactor from a 45 g L-1 fructose solution for 3h at 140°C. After the evaluation, the best results are obtained with SBA-15 LP and NTS, with conversions close to 99%, yield, and selectivity to EMF of 93 and 95%. 37 and 36 g.L-1.h-1 of EMF are produced respectively. The selectivity obtained is related to the textural properties (higher SBET, higher average Vp and Dp) and higher acidity. However, the SBA-15 LP with lower acidity slightly improved selectivity at the same conversion (99%). These results could be associated with the TOF and the density of acid centers. In this case, the distribution of acid centers in the structure determines the selectivity of the catalyst and not the total acidity.
