Resumen:
Ethoxymethylfurfural (EMF) is a cetane booster biofuel that could be added to or replace diesel fuel if it could be produced on a major scale at a competitive cost. EMF is obtained by etherification of Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) with ethanol in liquid phase in the presence of an acid catalyst. SBA-15-SO3H has been shown to have excellent properties for driving this reaction. The verification has been carried out in a batch reactor working at 140°C, 10 bar of N2 in 3 h. In this work, the behavior of the catalyst in a continuous tubular reactor is studied and the feed rate of reagents is adjusted for a fixed catalyst charge to obtain the highest yield and selectivity to EMF, starting from a 20 g.L-1 solution of HMF in ethanol as reaction medium. At higher solution flow rates, the amount of HMF entering the reactor is greater but the contact time with the catalyst decreases. There is an optimal contact time for a WHSV equal to 1.4 h-1 that produces greater selectivity to the ether. 9.4 mg.min-1 of EMF have been obtained, feeding 8 mg.min-1 of HMF, although the product purity is 85% due to byproducts traces and unreacted HMF.
