Resumen:
The behavior of acidic ion exchange resins, mesoporose (RII/M)-H+ and Gel (RII/G)-H+, in the dehydration of fructose to 5-HydroxyMetilFurfural (5-HMF), in different alcohol/water (9:1) as the reaction medium was study. The aim is to select the appropriate resin and a solvent that allows fructose solubilization (90 g/L) and stabilizes 5-HMF avoiding its degradation. Under the reaction conditions (120 °C, 4 bar of N2, 3 h, 1 g of resin and 25 mL of solution), the 5-HMF obtained can react with the alcohol to give the respective ether, although this decreases with increasing the molecular weight of alcohol. (RII/M)-H+ has better stability to 5-HMF than (RII/G)-H+, due to its lower acidity. Isopropanol appears to modify catalytic properties and increase the yield to 5-HMF. Selectivity to 5-HMF is adequate in iso and normal butanol, although the yield is lower. Immiscible oil phase formation has been observed that could be related to humin precursors. The fructose conversion was greater than 94% in all cases and despite the fact that the maximum yield to 5-HMF in isopropanol was with (RII/G)-H+, 59.3%, the (RII/M)-H+ is considered the more suitable catalyst due to its greater selectivity and products stability.
