Resumen:
Cognitive models of bulimia nervosa have stressed the importance of self-beliefs in the maintenance of the disorder. New findings, however, show a deeper and more general level of beliefs – called core beliefs - to also play a role in eating disorders. Several authors have stressed the importance of the identification and subsequent modification of maladaptive core beliefs for the treatment of bulimic patients. However, some important aspects of the conceptualization of core beliefs for bulimic patients have yet to be established in order to incorporate the modification of core beliefs into the treatment of bulimic patients. The main aim of this dissertation is to examine some relations assumed to exist between core beliefs; cognitions regarding weight, shape and eating; personality disorder; coping styles; and the psychiatric symptoms that characterize bulimic patients. The theoretical formulations of Young (1990) and Freeman (1995) form the framework for this examination. Findings show that core beliefs were indeed related to these relevant theoretical and clinical topics for bulimic patients.
