Resumen:
The neotropical genus Chionolaena is accepte as including the species of leucopholis which has been considered a separate genus by several authors because of its few flowered capitula. Chionolaena consist of small, more or less woody shrubs with a discontinuous distribution: central Mexico, northern colombia and southern Brazil, with disjunct populations in Central America (Costa Rica) and northern Amazonia (northern Venezuela). The most closely related genus is Gnaphaliothamnus from Mexico and Guatemala. Seventee species of Chionolaena are recognized, one of which, C. mexicana is recognized for the first time.
