Resumen:
Neogene to Quaternary volcanic sequences and igneous complexes in the Neuquén can be divided in three main groups. First, a series of interconnected volcaniclastic depocenters in the Andean region gathered in the Cura Mallín basin and contemporaneous within-plate products in the foreland region, developed during Late Oligocene to Early Miocene times; second, arc-related volcanic products expanded in the eastern Andean slope up to Late Miocene times; and third, Pliocene to Quaternary within-plate bimodal products located from the arc region to the foreland area. Description of spatial distribution of these sequences allows proposing a simple model in which shallowings of the subducted slab affected the northern and southern Neuquén areas respectively, followed by local steepenings in the last 5 Ma that produced differential asthenosphere injection in the retroarc zone, creating variable volcanic fields in duration and size.
