Resumen:
This study includes the analysis of the morphological and genetic variation of the common sea bream Pagrus pagrus, it compares two main areas of concentration, the northern (35 ºS- 38 °S) and the southern zones (39 °S- 41 °S), on the Buenos Aires coastline of the Argentine Sea. The body shape characterization presented two significantly different morphotypes (Wilks? Lambda = 0.224, P < 0.0001), the specimens in the northern zone showed a higher middle area while the ones in the southern zone were smaller and their caudal peduncle shorter. The zones did not yield significant genetic differences, not even at the control region of the mitochondrial DNA or the microsatellite loci. Even though this study has revealed that the common sea bream is not genetically structured, thus showing the presence of a single population, the phenotypic variation in the morphological patterns between both zones would define two management units for Pagrus pagrus from the Buenos Aires coastline.
