Abstract. HD 209458b is an exoplanet with similar characteristics tothe planet Jupiter, that orbits a star like our Sun. Due to the close-ness to its parent star (0.045 AU), part of the atmospheric material isswept away, forming a cometary wake, where the neutral part produces adrop in luminosity of 1.5% in the optic and 15 % in Lyman α. Previousobservational and theoretical works have been helpful to determine themass loss rate for nominal conditions of the stellar wind, applying theconditions known for our Sun. It is known that the range of velocities forthe solar wind varies between ∼ 400 and 1100 km/s which, in the caseof extrasolar planets, can produce significant changes in the structure ofthe cometary wake affecting the upper bound of the planetary mass lossrate. In this work we present a hydrodynamical study of this interactionfor different conditions of the stellar wind.
