Resumen:
Yerba mate (YM) has demonstrated antitumor effects against prostatic carcinogenesis, both in vivo and in vitro. These effects could be due to bioactive compounds present in YM, such as chlorogenic acid (Chl), rutin (Rut), caffeic acid (Caf), caffeine (Caffe) and theobromine (Theo). Several investigations have shown that these bioactive compounds have multiple beneficial effects on human health. Our objective was to evaluate and compare the effects of an aqueous-based YM extract as a complete matrix and its bioactive compounds individually on the proliferation and viability of prostate cancer (PCa) cell lines. To achieve our goal, we made an optimized aqueous-based YM extract by ultrasound technique. Phenolic compounds and alkaloids present in the YM extract were determined using the HPLC-UV system. We evaluated proliferation (by MTT) and viability (using the Trypan Blue technique) of three human PCa cell lines with different aggressiveness and hormone dependence: LNCaP, DU-145, and PC3, which were exposed to YM extract or to each of its bioactive compounds separately. The results demonstrated that the complete YM extract generated a significant decrease in proliferation in the PC3 (p
