Resumen:
Categories are created and used by human beings in order to develop models of the environment, to be able to adapt to its modifications, and to communicate with other human beings. Cognition is mediated by signs and signs are arranged in categories, which provide a means of forming groups and classes. Colors constitute a perceptual continuum, but names impose divisions in this continuum, and these divisions constitute the limits of color categories. Color categories are not completely natural, as to be constructed exactly in the same way in all cultures and languages, and yet they are not completely arbitrary as to preclude the existence of common domains between cultures and languages. This paper presents an overview on studies related to color categorization, reviewing literature with linguistic, semantic, cognitivist, semiotic, and anthropological points of view, and looking at different hypothesis that have been proposed on the subject.
