The aim of this work is to improve the superficial properties of alpha-alumina cylindres  which present a low toughness and an important quantity of superficial cracks and fractures when they are obtained by thermal treatment of gamma-alumina cylinders. The purpose is to obatin a mullite coating on alumina strating from the reaction between the substrate and a silica superficial coating prepared by the alkoxide route.
