While housed, medicated, andkept on restricted source of feed, the microbiota of domesticated horse ishypothesized to be altered. Here we evaluated the intestinal microbiome of 57domestic and feral horses from different locations in three continents,observing geographical differences. Higher abundance of eukaryota (p<0.05)and viruses (p<0.05) and lower of archaea (p<0.05) was found in feralanimals when compared with domestic ones. The abundance of genes coding formicrobe-produced enzymes involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates was also significantlyhigher (p<0.05) in feral animals, regardless of the geographic origin of thesamples. Moreover, differences on the intestinal resistome between both groupsof animals were also observed. The domestic horse microbiome was clearlyenriched in genes conferring resistance to tetracyclines, likely reflecting theextensive use of this antibiotic on the management of these animals. Ourresults shown an impoverishment of the intestinal microbiome indomestic horses compared to feral animals, with diet, antibiotic exposure andhygiene as likely drivers. Our results offer a comprehensive view of the horseintestinal microbiome and the impact of domestication, this may uncover noveltargets for modulating the horse microbiome to enhance animal health andwell-being. Keywords.
