Resumen:
It has been established that process operability (i.e. controllability, security, flexibility, resiliency) strongly depends on the process design, and has a great impact on its profitability. This is why both industry and academia have placed a great interest in the integration of system design and operability of chemical processes. Polymer science, however, is now taking its first steps in this field. In another work in this Symposium, we presented a Mixed Integer Dynamic Optimization (MIDO) approach for the simultaneous design and control of styrene polymerization in a semi-batch jacketed reactor. For an industrial reactor of 5 m3, geometry, initiator mixture composition and control system were optimally determined in a single optimization run.
