Resumen:
The emergence of resistance to multiple antibiotics has been favored by excessive use of antimicrobials. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) represents a serious problem for animal and human health. There is evidence that resistant strains of S. aureus may be transmitted between humans and animals (1). This situation leads us to investigate new therapeutic alternatives to face complicated bacterial infections. Essential oils(EOs) are a mixture of compounds, and they are a great resource to deal with the antimicrobial resistance crisis (2). Melaleuca armillaris Sm. belongs to the family of Myrtaceae, which is rich in species with EOs. Many investigations evidence the great activity of vegetable extracts (3). Cloxacillin (CLOX) is an antibiotic widely used in veterinary medicine against S. aureus. Our aim was tostudy the pharmacodynamic interaction established between EO of Melaleuca armillaris and CLOX in order to maximize the activity of the antibiotic against S. aureus (methicillin-resistant and methicillin-susceptible).
