The
study of dimer adsorption on infinitely long, finite width M, (100) terraces,
simulates the adsorption of particles that bind to two nearestneighbor sites,
such as that of CO/Ni(100). It is conducted in the entire range of first- and
second-neighbor interaction energies, V and W. The
occupational
characteristics {coverage, number of
first-neighbors per site, number of second-neighbors per sites}, and the entropy characterize the state of the
adsorption system. For attractive first-neighbors (V > 0) there are two
series of low-temperature energy phase diagrams depending on whether M is even
or odd. Both series coincide in the infinite-M limit, with one non-trivial and
perfectly ordered phase {1/2, 1/4, 0} for W/V < −1/2.For repulsive first-neighbors, the phase diagrams
are obtained for terraces up to and including M = 7. In the infinite-M limit,
there are four non-trivial phases {1/3, 0,
0}, {1/2, 1/4, 0}, {1/2, 0, 1/2}, and {2/3, 1/3, 1}. All these are new results as past computations
neglected second-neighbor interactions, and have been carried out for V < 0
showing the existence of only two phases {1/2, 0, 1/2},
and {2/3, 1/3, 1}. Here, in the
infinite-M limit and for V < 0, Monte Carlo simulation and finite-size scaling
are used for the study of the heat capacity as function of temperature, and
estimate the critical temperature of the various order-disorder transitions as
a function of W/|V |. The paper presents the relevance of these results to
experimental observations.
