Resumen:
The activation of the transcription factor NF-kB hasbeen proposed to play a dual role during memoryrelated synaptic plasticity: a) signaling to the nucleusfor control of gene expression, and b) synaptic taggingto control the local specificity of synaptic changes. We have started to investigate the role of thistranscription factor in the synaptic plasticity thatunderlies olfactory memory in honey bees.Olfactory memory in honey bees is in part based onchanges in local neurons of the antennal lobes thatbranch in substructures called glomeruli. According tocurrent models, olfactory memory affects lateralconnections between glomeruli. Changes induced bymemory should be specific in branches of the localneurons that innervate the affected glomeruli .Several members of the Rel/NFkB transcription factorfamily; ie. Dorsal, Relish, Dif, Cactus were recentlyidentified in the genome of the honey bee Apismellifera.
