Resumen:
Using a worldwide data set for the year 2009 and a data envelope analysis, this paper measures the efficiency of 190 countries in producing health results. In the estimation of the production frontier, per capita total health expenditure is used as input and infant mortality rate and life expectancy are used as outputs. An analysis of the determinants of the efficiency using a TOBIT model suggests that African countries are less efficient. Also, the quality of institutions (measured using the corruption perceptions index as proxy) and the percentage of total health expenditure financed by private insurers seems to have a statistically significant impact on efficiency.
