Resumen:
The time seabirds have to forage is restrictedwhile breeding, as time at sea must be balanced against theneed to take turns with the partner protecting the nest siteor offspring, and timing constraints change once thebreeding season is over. Combined geolocator-immersiondevices were deployed on eleven Imperial Shags (fourmales and seven females) in Argentina (43040S; 6420W)in November 2006 and recovered in November 2007.During the breeding season, females foraged throughoutthe morning, males exclusively in the afternoon, and variabilitybetween individuals was low. Outside the breedingseason, both sexes foraged throughout the day, and variabilitybetween individuals was high. Timing differencesmay be explained by higher constraints on foraging orgreater demands of parental duties experienced by thesmaller sex, females in this case. Sexual differences inreproductive role, feeding habits or proficiency can alsolead to segregation in timing of foraging, particularly whilebreeding.
