Resumen:
The aim of this study was to analyze hydatid disease cases diagnosed and/or operated in Diagnostic and Public and Private Health Centers of Mar del Plata City, General Pueyrredón District, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. In addition, the purpose of this study was to discuss the importance of the hydatid disease in the General Pueyrredón District and bordering districts. The work was carried out in an Imaging Diagnosis Center and two Health Centers. Clinical records of all patients diagnosed and/or operated of hydatid disease between 1996 and 1998 were analyzed. A data file was completed for each patient. During the studied period 138 cases of hydatid disease were registered, 52.2% corresponding to the female sex. The average age was 52.6 years. The mean annual prevalence of human hydatidosis ranged from 0.5 to 32.4 (cases per 100 000 population) in the different districts of the region. The computed tomography (CT) was the most used technique with the 67.4% of the cases. Hepatic localization was the most frequently seen (73.2%). Of the 138 patients, 74 (53.6%) received surgery. Of the patients who received surgery, only 15 received drug treatment. The results obtained in this study reveal the importance of hydatid disease as a public health problem in the General Pueyrredón District and bordering districts.
