When an energetic ion penetrates a material the latent track produced by the deposited energy can be modeled as a central partially melting core zone along the ion trajectory, surrounded by a larger region where some physico-chemical modifications take place. When these perturbed zones start to overlap each other some interference effect occurs. A previous suitable irradiated zone of one latent track can be eliminated by the core zone of others. Structural analysis with infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was carried out on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) irradiated using C and He beams with different fluences. From the FTIR spectra it is observed that the absorbance of certain chemical groups in irradiated PVDF varies with fluence. It reaches a maximum and then decreases, without attaining a saturation value. From these absorbance measurements, the track dimensions were determined using a previously developed Monte Carlo simulation.
