The text offers a general framework to the works that make up the book. It explains the intentions of the editors and the axes that give consistency to the ensemble of the chapters. The introduction also affirms the comparative vocation that characterizes a volume that gathers contributions concerning cases of European and American Marian devotions. The first paragraph explains why the nineteenth century is central to the economy of the book, and presents the fundamental features of the period. Considered the "century of secularization", the nineteenth century also witnessed important religious ferments. The second paragraph refers to Marian devotions throughout the two centuries the book embraces, referring to the specific contributions that shape the book. The third and last paragraph explains the motivations and implications of its transnational approach.
