Resumen:
In defining the degree of knowledgethat exists about South American estuaries inretation with other countries and/orcontinents, we made a bibliographic analysisof the papers pUblished in the twointernational .joumals which their mainemphasis is in estuaries. They are dedicatedto an international audience and open tocontributions from all over the world. Theselected journals are Estuaries (published bythe Estuarine Research Federation, USA)and Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science(ECSS) formerly known as Estuarine, CoastalMarine Science (published by the Estuarine,CoastaJ Science Association, UK). Our objective was to demonstrate that thenumber of papers being published in theinternational literature about estuaries ofSouth America is an under representationof the actual work being done. Our mainemphasis was also to differentiatebetween the various main subjects inwhich those estuaries were approached inthe papers.
