Amor e imágenes en el LBA: loco amor y buen amor, una vida entre dos Paraísos

La gran unidad del LBA , más allá de algunas referencias anafóricas y catafóricas que conectan las andanzas del Arcipreste, se evidencia en el hilado de imágenes diseminadas con inteligencia a lo largo del texto. Sin embargo, como bien señala Philips, la contribución original del Arcipreste "lies not in his choice of images so much as in the use he makes of imagery throughout the LBA" (1983: 180). Siguiendo en la línea comenzada por Philips en su The imagery of the ‘Libro the Buen Amor’, intentaremos abordar en el presente trabajo uno de los problemas que su estudio ha dejado sin resolver, teniendo en cuenta las críticas que ha recibido por parte de Morrás (1987: 61-3) : "[...] images are considered in isolation from the context in which they occur so that we miss the role they play in the episodes.[...] The characteristics of the images, their meaning and their function need to be examined rhetorically (as visual elements that help to adorn the elocutio) and narratively (as meaningful nuclei that capture the reader’s imagination and as motifs that structure the narrative material while they imply a progression in it)". Lejos de una respuesta totalmente exhaustiva a estas críticas, intentaremos un primer acercamiento a la cuestión analizando cómo varias de estas imágenes se repiten, se conectan y se van fusionando a través de los episodios de manera que su significación se expande y articula simbólica y alegóricamente hasta formar un verdadero sistema de doble plano, uno erótico y otro religioso, que resultaría totalmente funcional a la intención de Juan Ruiz.
