Resumen:
Arsenic is an abundant toxic metalloid in our environment and is bioaccumulated in exposed species, including humans. Due to recent volcanism (in geological terms) of the Andes, this contaminant is in high proportions in some superficial aquifers [1]. The Andes continue beyond Tierra del Fuego, under the sea, reappearing as islands and then emerge again as Antartandes, the great mountain chain of the Antarctic Peninsula. In these regions has also described the presence of As in sediments and macro-algae [2]. Here, we report arsenic bioaccumulation as well as elemental composition in Patagonian and Antarctic organisms analyzed by X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry in grazing incidence geometry (SR-TXRF) at the D09B-XRF beamline of the LNLS.
