Resumen:
An energy management system strategy for a university campus microgrid is proposed to increase its self-consumption from renewable energy sources, reducing its operational cost and network overload. The energy management system operates controllable distributed energy resources, energy storage systems, and nonlinear loads in real-time to generate adequate scheduling to achieve the objectives. A Li-ion battery converter supplies average power, with the supercapacitor converter handling load power transients. A sliding mode-based energy management system is developed to split the load demand between the devices based on the load current, battery state of charge, and respecting source constraints. The resulting energy management system is simulated on a model of a microgrid with a 6.4 kW PV generator and the actual load of a level 2 charger of a battery electric vehicle showing a good transient response with low overshoot as well as respecting source operating constraints.
