Multidisciplinary Workshop on Southern South American Dust; Puerto Madryn, Argentina, 3–5 October 2007; Recent studies have emphasized the impact of dust emissions from southern South American (SSA) deserts (in particular the Patagonian desert) on past and present climate, as well as possible links to marine biology and carbon uptake in the high-latitude southern oceans. However, understanding is hindered by the lack of observations about dust activity, its composition, and its long-range transport. Although model simulations are in general agreement with the limited observations of Southern Hemisphere dust aerosols, many of the modeling efforts addressing aerosol transport and ocean biogeochemistry in the Southern Ocean rely on measurements and parameterizations from Northern Hemisphere locations.
