Resumen:
Chirikov (1979) introduced the first physical criterion for the on-set of global chaotic motion in Hamiltonian systems. Since then, there have been numerous attempts to apply Chirikov?s criterion to the restricted three-body problem, both analytically and numerically. However, it has never been clear what is the actual relationship between resonance overlap and the Hill stability criterion. In this presentation we study the motion of a test particle, under the influence of a central star and a nearby perturber, and we deduce the boundary between stable and unstable motion. Also, we review the basic resonance overlap criterion and we compare its predictions to the Hill stability criterion using analytical models and high-definition dynamical maps. Finally, we propose an optimal approach using both criteria.
