Resumen:
Iron overload is a hallmark of retinal degenerative disorders such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This iron-induced oxidative stress triggers inflammatory and degeneration processes through the activation of multiple and opposite cellular responses. The study of inflammatory events and related signaling pathways during iron-induced retinal oxidative stress may therefore contribute to explain the molecular bases for retinal degenerative diseases. PLA2 family involves a big family of proteins that catalyze the cleavage of the sn-2 position fatty acid in the phospholipid backbone. Particularly, arachidonic acid (AA) released by PLA2 may be susbtrate of COX-2 and other inflammatory related enzymes. It is known the important role of secretory PLA2 (sPLA2) in inflammatory diseases. Some sPLA2 have anti-inflammatory properties and others have pro-inflammatory functions. In this work we characterize the regulation of sPLA2 and COX-2 during iron-induced retinal degeneration.
