Resumen:
Multilayer films are increasingly used in the food packaging industry due to the growing demand for improved barrier and mechanical properties, transparency, sealability and machinability that also provide innovative solutions to food quality and product marketability. Multilayer packaging films combine the qualities of individual polymeric layers thus providing a superior package with excellent barrier properties, with implications on the shelf life. Moreover, unique functionalities such as antioxidant and antimicrobial effects can be conveniently achieved, without affecting other desirable properties of the packaging. This chapter provides an up-to-date review on advancements in the preparation of multilayer films for food packaging applications, including the several techniques used to improve the adhesion and compatibility between layers. It also discusses the current trend in multi-layer packaging regarding the replacement of traditional non-biodegradable plastics with bio-based plastics, as well as advances in nanotechnology that have paved the way for the emergence of new food packaging materials.
