Martensitic Transformation Temperatures in Fe-Mn-Si Alloys: Experiments and Thermodynamic Analysis

A progress report is presented of a long-term research project focusing on the thermodynamic and kinetics aspects of the fcc«hcp martensitic transformations in Fe-based systems. In this occasion we present new experimental determinations of AS and MS martensitic transformation temperatures in Fe-Mn-Si alloys. The range of composition of our alloys were 15-22 wt % Mn and 0-6 wt%Si. In this composition range there is lack of experimental information in the literature, and there are not magnetic ordering effects, which could affect the martensitic transformation temperatures. Hence we can concentrate on the effect of the Si additions upon the AS and MS temperatures. Our results are presented as iso-AS and iso-MS lines. In addition, we analyse these data using phenomenological models for Gibbs energy, and the concept of driving force and resistance to the start of the martensitic transformation. We compare our results with previously published experimental data, as well as previous calculations by Forsberg and Ågren.
