Resumen:
Usually, tectonic rotations around vertical axis are calculated with the method proposed by Demarest (1983) under the assumption that the directions follow a Fisher distribution (Fisher, 1953). However, as was already noted, the distribution of paleomagnetic directions are elongated in N-S direction (e.g. Deenen et al., 2011; Tauxe, Kent, 2004). It is therefore inappropriate to use Fisher statistics in directional datasets. From this assumption, we have developed a bootstrap approach for the determination of tectonic rotations in a fully data driven way, where the uncertainties are calculated empirically. A preliminary version of the program implementing the method described here is available from L. Gallo on request.
