Resumen:
1,3-butadiene (BD), an important industrial intermediate used for synthetic rubber, elastomers, and polymeric resins manufacture, is mainly obtained as a by-product of ethylene and propylene production by cracking of naphtha and gas oil. Due to the increase in the exploitation of “shale gas”, the production of ethylene by naphtha cracking has decreased and consequently also the production of butadiene from nonrenewable resources. Therefore, new studies have emerged with the aim of finding alternatives based on renewable raw materials. The isomers of butanediol (BDOL) (1,2-,1,3-, 1,4- and 2,3-BDOL) can be obtained in high yields by fermentation of glucose, sucrose, glycerol and mixtures of glucose and xylose becoming an attractive raw material for bio-BD synthesis process. Particularly, published results of the dehydration of 1,3BDOL to produce BD using solid acid catalysts has been promising , although the main drawback of this route is the activity decay by coke formation. The deactivation mechanism and nature of the coke formed during the synthesis of BD by gas phase dehydration of 1,3BDOL have been studied on HZSM5, TPA(H3PW12O40)/SiO2, SiO2/Al2O3 and Al2O3. Insoluble coke was only detected on TPA/SiO2 and its formation was related to the presence of strong Brønsted acid sites whereas the coke on HZSM5 was formed mainly by polyaromatics suggesting a shape selectivity mechanism in the coke formation .
